Call For Artists:
WORKS FOR A PREPARED LIBRARY

The Public Library of Cincinnati & Hamilton County is seeking submissions & performers for a one-night exhibition of works based on chance operations. This special edition of Experimental Music at the Library will feature experimental music, performances, video art, & other time-based media, as well as a free publication of two-dimensional & text based work.

  1. Combining existing ideas is an interesting way of making new ideas. Chance operations are an interesting way of combining things.
  2. Libraries are full of existing ideas. Libraries are also a public space.
  3. Let's use the library as source material for making & presenting new ideas in a public space!
Experimental Music at the Library is a monthly performance series designed to bring experimental music, performance art, and other time-based media to a wider audience. It has garnered local & national attention & was recently featured in Library Journal. Previous events in the series have included a live circuit-bent soundtrack to W.F. Murnau's Nosferatu & performance art from the Brooklyn-based collective Panoply Performance Laboratory.

Works for a Prepared Library will be on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at 7pm at the Main Library downtown.

TEXT / IMAGE WORKS
Artists Chris Luessen & Tory Keith are curating a zine to accompany the exhibition. The zine will include both text & images. Submissions should pertain to chance operations & be in black & white or grayscale.

TIME BASED WORKS
Using chance operations, create a work that can be shown or performed in 2 minutes & 16 seconds. For purposes of this exhibition, time-based works are defined as art/music performance, video, sound, &/or spoken word.

Deadline for all submissions is Friday, February 22, 2013 at 11:47pm.

GUIDELINES
In your submission, please describe how the work(s) use chance operations & will use the library as a source. Free interpretation of "chance operations" and "library" is encouraged.

There is no limit to the number of works a group or individual artist can submit. Performance works may be submitted as a detailed description along with documentation of past work. Submissions must be in .doc, .pdf, .mov, or .mp3 format. Please title all of your files with your last name & first name followed by the number of the documentation (e.g. lastname_firstname_001.jpg). Each submission should include the following:
  • Cover page with contact information.
  • List of works submitted.  Include title, corresponding file name(s), format/media, & a brief description.
  • Work(s) and/or applicable documentation.
Submissions should be suitable for all ages.

Important for live performance works: Because this event will take place in the span of an hour and a half & we want to present as many works as possible, preference will be given to performances that entail minimal setup. For sound & experimental music performances, please be prepared to scale your volume to the space.  See here for details about the space.

Submissions may be submitted online (see below) or dropped off in person to the Popular Library Department c/o Steve Kemple on the first floor of the Main Library.

Email questions to steven.kemple@cincinnatilibrary.org.
